    Sustainability through knowledge and participation
(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2023-10-03) Anderssen-Dukes, Heidi
Libraries are structures for democracy and freedom of speech. The trade unions empower people through the tripartite collaboration. Cooperation between employers, unions and government has long traditions in Norwegian work life. Through tripartite collaboration in municipal services such as libraries, unions work together with local government in the development of community services. As a trade union we organize librarians and other professionals working in libraries, and we strive to enhance their working conditions. Libraries are part of the government’s structure for the freedom of speech. Our members from public libraries, school libraries and county provide a platform for political debate and knowledge to society. The libraries are in co-creating processes with both non- governmental organizations and businesses in the local community. The trade union seeks to strengthen cooperation between employees, employers, and local government. Together we maintain balance of power, and access to public space and knowledge. Both libraries and trade unions include people from across society.
