Item Ambassadors of the book: competences and training for heritage librarians(De Gruyter Saur, 2012) IFLA Rare Books and Special Collections Section; Mouren, RaphaëleWhat competences are needed for heritage librarians, and how can they be taught? The management of heritage collections requires a unique mix of knowledge and skills, including expertise in preservation and conservation; heritage policies; acquisitions and collection management; bibliographic description; the materiality of books and other collection objects; and the history of libraries. Librarians must also understand the need for open access, the importance of marketing, and the challenges posed by digitization.Item Competency Guidelines for Rare Books and Special Collections Professionals(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2020-12) IFLA Rare Books and Special Collections Section; Kilmarx, Beth T.; Bubenik, Claudia; Periasamy, Makeswary; Phillips, Meg; Vincent, Helen; Castrillo, Maria; Cataldo de Azevedo, Fabiano; Fabian, Claudia; Garcia-Monge, Isabel; Haraldsvik-Lyngsnes, Alexander; Schuler, Irma; Tan, HuisimLibraries are the guardians of cultural memory and the preservers of cultural heritage. Within larger libraries and as stand-alone repositories, special collections libraries are the specific sites where documentary and cultural heritage is preserved. Not only the information content of these handwritten works, printed texts, works on paper, audio-visual materials and artifacts deserves preservation, but also the objects themselves because of their historical and cultural significance. It is these collections that lie at the core of special collections librarianship. These guidelines outline the competencies developed for all library professionals who work with special collections materials, both analog and digital. They provide direction and focus for special collections professionals to facilitate their own career development, as well as to manage their special collections in line with their institutional policies and user needs. It is hoped that the guidelines can serve as a basis on which training programs can be developed to ensure special collections professionals develop core competencies relevant to their continuing professional development. The guidelines also delineate the ethical framework within which special collections professionals are to perform their professional duties to uphold their positions as the trusted stewards of cultural heritage materials. Item Early Printed Books as Material Objects(De Gruyter Saur, 2010) IFLA Rare Books and Special Collections Section; Wagner, Bettina; Reed, MarciaThe papers collected in this volume discuss descriptive methods and present conclusions relevant for the history of the book production and reception. Books printed in Europe in the 15th and 16th century still had much in common with manuscripts. They are not mere textual sources, but also material objects whose physical make-up and individual features need to be taken into account in library projects for cataloguing and digitization.Item The History and Cultural Heritage of Chinese Calligraphy, Printing, and Library Work(De Gruyter Saur, 2010-03) IFLA Rare Books and Special Collections Section; Allen, Susan M.; Lin, Zuzao; Cheng, Xiaolan; Bos, Jan; Koopman, SjoerdIn China the tradition of a book society is longer than anywhere else in the world. This fine selection reflects the width and depth of this extremely important and immense Chinese heritage. The Editors are Chinese and international experts on book history.
