Item Managing and Developing a LGBT+ Collection: The Case of the Nélida Piñon Library at Cervantes Institute in Rio de Janeiro(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2023-09-07) Della Paschoa, Carlos Alberto; Sousa Melo, Elisete deThis article aims to present the steps in the management of LGBT+ Collection of the Nélida Piñon Library of Cervantes Institute in Rio de Janeiro. One of the guidelines of the Collection Development Policy of the Cervantes Institute Libraries Network is to offer a representative, current and balanced vision of the Spanish speaking countries cultural reality. Following this guideline, the library of Cervantes Institute in Rio de Janeiro began to develop a collection specialised in LGBT+ culture and literature to meet the needs of its users, since Spain is one of the forerunner countries in the approval of same-sex marriage (2005), along with the Netherlands, Belgium and Canada. It has progressive legislation on the rights of the LGBT+ community, such as homoparental adoption or official gender status change. In cultural terms, both Spanish cinema and literature reinforce and highlight references to LGBT+ culture in Spain. To contrast with the Spanish reality, the collection also brings together works on LGBT+ culture in Hispanic American Countries. According to the president of Cervantes Institute, Luis García Montero, the institution's mission is not only to spread Spanish vocabulary and culture, but also to show the best face of Spain around the world. And that Cervantes Institute wants its venues to be "spheres of freedom" in countries where there are no LGTB+ rights. Started in 2005, the collection has been expanded over time, currently bringing together around 300 documents, including books and videos. The library seeks to acquire works that deals with the different groups of the LGBT+ community and has documents on children's and young people's literature, gender studies and Queer theory, lesbian, transvestite, transsexual, bisexual and transgender issues, biographies and the history of homosexuality in Spain and Latin America. The library promotes and organises activities focused on LGBT+ culture, such as the presentation of the short film "The inevitable story of Letícia Diniz" by Marcelo Pedreira about the situation of transvestites in Brazil, supported the Rio de Janeiro International Gender and Sexuality Festival up to 2019. It is noted that the collection is a reference for researchers and scholars of LGBT+ culture in the Hispanic Universe. Therefore, it meets the purposes of the institution. This is a report of the experience with a qualitative focus on the development of specialised collections. The purpose of this paper is discussing some aspects of the cataloguing process of the documents from the personal collection of the writer Nélida Piñon, which was donated to the library of the Cervantes Institute in Rio de Janeiro. This collection gathers around 8,000 documents from the Humanities area and they are in several languages. Many works have dedications and origin marks, among other characteristics. The Nélida Piñon Library is part of the Cervantes Institute Libraries Network - RBIC - which has a collection development policy as well as a cataloguing and document classification system, defined for the network collective catalogue. To meet this need, a cataloguing project was developed and is being carried out under the consultancy of the Art Libraries and Information Centres Network of the State of Rio de Janeiro - REDARTE/RJ. Taking into consideration that RBIC is a network of Spanish libraries, a profile of the cataloguer's competencies was established in order to perform the descriptive representation of the personal collection of Nélida Piñon to meet the RBIC procedures, such as good knowledge of the Spanish language and culture, knowledge of other languages (English, French, German, Italian, Galician, Catalan), experience with UDC, RDA, MARC21, ISBD. However, during the realization of the project, it was observed that this personal collection presents particularities that require a more detailed descriptive representation so that the informational richness of each document is reflected in the cataloguing file and consequently in the collective catalogue. This fact led the cataloguing team to search in the specialized literature the rules and standards of descriptive and thematic representation that could meet these peculiarities of the collection. It was realised that for the technical processing of special collections, the skills of the cataloguer are fundamental and are reflected in the quality of the catalogue: a good descriptive representation allows users to access the information they are seeking. To this end, the list of competencies of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) and of the European Council of Information Associations (ECIA) was consulted to identify a series of requirements necessary for the cataloguer who works with special collections. It is observed that librarians who will carry out the cataloguing process, in addition to their academic training, need to develop competencies to work with special collections. The cataloguer must have a general culture, know how to read and analyse a document, that is, know how to verify the data needed to transcribe and describe a document. It is believed that the professional cataloguer needs to remain in constant learning, to be updated on innovations in the area of cataloguing, to be familiar with standards, policies and different methods of cataloguing and descriptive representation. This is an experience report with a qualitative focus on the development of special collections.Item Preservation of Hispanic Memory in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil: the Local Collection of the Nélida Piñon Library of the Instituto Cervantes(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2023-09-05) Della Paschoa, Carlos Alberto; Sousa Melo, Elisete de; Carneiro Ruas, MarceloThis work aims to present the Local Collection of the Nélida Piñon Library of Cervantes Institute in Rio de Janeiro, which objective is to gather and document works that deal with the historical and cultural relations between Brazil and Spain, between Brazil and Hispano-America. The Hispanic presence in Brazil dates back to the 16th century and Rio de Janeiro is one of the four cities marked by Spanish immigration. The Local Collection began to be developed in 2004, the year the library was created and opened to the public, having as policy the annual acquisition of titles that meet its profile. The collection has been growing over time with the arrival of donations, which led to the creation of special sections according to specific themes and aspects (linguistics, biographies, literature, etc.). Among them are the collections of the philologist Adriano da Gama Kury, of the poet Reynaldo Valinho Alvarez, and of the writer Nélida Piñon. In historical terms, the sections dedicated to Hispanic personalities who have marked the history of Brazil and the formation of Brazilian literature: the Carlota Joaquina de Borbón, Spanish queen consort of John VI, King of Portugal, and that of the Jesuit of Canary origin, José de Anchieta whose works mark the beginning of literary production on Brazilian soil. It gathers works by Hispanic personalities who came to live or to work in Brazil and in the city of Rio de Janeiro, writers such as Juan Valera (Spain), Manuel Puig (Argentina), Alfonso Reyes (Mexico) and Gabriela Mistral (Chile), Rosa Chacel (Spain). The Local Collection is a vehicle for the preservation of the Hispanic memory in Brazil. This is an experience report with a qualitative approach. It is perceived that thematic convergence in bibliographic collections is an important object of study and that research needs to be developed in this field.
