Item Academic libraries; adaptive learning; art history; asynchronous learning; information literacy(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2022-06-21) Loftis, ElsaIn a collaborative effort between three departments at Portland State University, investigators designed and created Information Literacy (IL) modules tailored to the needs of Art History students utilizing two delivery platforms. One platform employed adaptive software (in this study, the product is called Realizeit), and the other was a static environment called Pressbooks. Students were randomly divided into cohorts based on these delivery methods. The author compared results of pre and post information literacy assessments and completed an analysis of students’ preliminary bibliographies to measure the success of the IL instruction. But the core investigation was to determine whether the same content delivered in different online learning environments were appreciably different in terms of students’ performance outcomes. This study reaffirms the value of information literacy instruction in Art History classes as evidenced by significant student improvements. Regarding the efficacy of adaptive learning software, however, the outcomes of this study are inconclusive.Item Active Ageing Learning Market: Enabling People as the Sustainable Re-sources for the Society(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2023-07-17) He, Jian HaoThere are a total of 12 districts in Taipei City, Taiwan. Senior Active Learning Centers are established for the respective districts, and 6 of which are organized by Taipei Public Library. Among these establishments, the Senior Active Learning Demonstration Center of Daan has been promoting the Active Ageing Learning Market with reference to the spirit of the SDGs since 2022. With the civic participation via i-Voting and the philosophy of self-directed learning combined, it put the participants back in the driving seat for learning. The program was inspired by the idea of crowdfunding platform. First, the active senior readers propose their thoughts and wishes for courses. After discussions and voting, the courses that pass the threshold of second will then have resources matched by the Center for course opening. Also, participants are empowered as lecturers or teaching assistants to further give back to the society. The program not just promotes older workforce reutilization, drawing retired individuals to serve as lecturers or teaching assistants, but also keeps tabs on the post-curriculum development of participants and invites them to be the brand ambassadors to the Center following the concept of brand management, so as to attract more people to the community of lifelong learning.Item Adapting Aspects of FRBR for Artworks in Wikidata(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2023-07-21) Nakasone, SonoeMany prominent museums have made efforts to represent their art holdings within Wikidata, gaining exposure beyond those museums’ websites and adding data to an open web of knowledge. But what of artworks that are not entirely unique such as print or sculpture editions? Wikidata uses a linked data framework for describing and relating people, things, places, and concepts. The beauty of such technology is that unique identifiers bring together data about the same things and ideas regardless of language barriers or label inconsistencies. How does this function when two or more museums have instantiations of the same work? This presentation discusses ways of addressing the question above within Wikidata and outlines the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s current practices, which adapt and apply FRBR’s (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) conceptual model to represent artwork editions. Keywords: Artwork editions, Wikidata, Linked data, FRBR, SculptureItem Advocating Public Libraries by the SDGs(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2022-09-14) Sahavirta, HarriThe library world has recognized the importance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the fact that they can be taken as a starting point when considering ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable libraries. The SDGs are general in nature, though they approach sustainability from many angles. In virtue of many-sidedness, they balance the debate on sustainable development, which, incidentally, is prone to focusing solely on carbon neutrality or emission reduction. However, because of the generality, they do not offer a ready-made action plan. Thus, the SDGs should be clarified and interpreted in the library framework. In addition, the SDGs are interlinked and show how sustainable development depends on factors that are interdependent. A national project (2020-2021) Bringing environmental awareness of public libraries to the 2020s investigated the environmental awareness of Finnish public libraries. The project included a survey on public libraries’ environmental work and values but also the SDGs were worked on workshops. The project showed that the SDGs can be used to broaden and deepen the environmental awareness of libraries. However, they also offer a visually well-designed and internationally accepted tool for marketing public libraries by clarifying how diversely libraries have adopted sustainability and promote the SDGs.Item Agile Methodology in the Promotive Activities of the “Svetozar Marković” University Library(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2023-09-04) Župan, VesnaThis paper is focused on the agile methodology in a digital library environment. Text before you refers to the promotive activity of the “Svetozar Marković” University Library in Belgrade. The author of this paper has a documents convergence in mind. That convergence is desirable for the promotive activities in each university library. This paper is a case study. At the same time it is a descriptive study. Its goal is to explain promotive activities realized by the University Library mentioned here, but through their usual phases – beginning with a proposal until the end. Those promotive activities for whose realization agile methodology was being used in Library are taken into account. In certain empirical framework, those persons who use agile methodology are librarians with long professional experience. Their usual characteristic is that they have strong information skills. Except that, they have abilities for efficient individual and team work. Furthermore they are oriented towards low-cost solutions. New technological environment is close to them. The agile methodologies do not exclude the implementation of some traditional means. Combined operations give often a very successful result. A librarian who performs promotive activities, doesn’t neglect in practice his current set of obligations and tasks. He tries to connect them with those events that arrive. The Library regularly looks for and finds such events in order to stay in contact with users and achieve their loyalty. It tends to receive new readers. During this post-covid period the relationship towards library audience is more open. Library users receive new information and widen their own knowledge reading catalogues of exhibitions. It is in such a way that users are being reminded of some important facts from the world of science and receive new knowledge as well as professional recommendations for reading through bibliographies which are included into the exhibitions catalogues. Such very popular literature always finds readers easily. This descriptive study shows how librarian can make educational influence to actual and potential users and tends to make them understand better the type of the library. It is a way to widen also the membership of the library through attracting those readers who need the library such as it is – with its’ technical equipment, strategy, collections and the opportunity to use sources in Serbian and in foreign languages. Making library reality closer to users will help them get acquainted better with its’ staff and collections. Services and the collections are more accessive if there are monographies published in a printed form or on CD-s. The University Library has some hybrid editions of catalogues which improve the image of this institution in public. What makes the behaviour of a librarian truly agile is his entire effort to make certain creator, his life and his work closer to users. Except that, the way of presenting news in the library includes introductive texts, posters, computer presentations, and diverse sources of information. We live in the epoch of information-communication technologies. So, informatics with standards for librarians is being implemented in cataloguing and classificating the catalogues of exhibitions. These are the standards which are being implemented for cataloguing all other monographies including doctoral dissertations, master theses and conference books from professional or scientific meetings. A catalogue which is classificated this way confirms to readers who were present or absent that an event was organized. That publication including indispensable reviews will inform him wider on the event he had maybe neglected. Agile methodology including oral and written presentation gives synergetic result which contributes to a more successful work in the domain of promotive activities. It is a way to stimulate the interest of readers for Library work and development. An environment, a library, designed to meet everyone’s needs. Universal Design is, and has been, explained simply as good design. The design and composition are understood, accessed, and used by everyone - not only by someone disabled. In Malmö, Sweden, there are twelve libraries spread across the municipality. Are these libraries accessible for everyone? Maybe not, but they are a work in progress. A library wherever it is located must be a welcoming place for everyone wanting to visit. It is a human right. Presented in this paper is a guide written to help and inspire all staff working with accessibility at any of Malmö’s libraries. Does this guide alone let us reach the universal design – no, however there are many changes being made throughout our libraries and they all are striving for universal design. Keywords: Universal design, disability, guide, accessibilityItem ALIPH : safeguarding written heritage in conflict zones and post-conflict situations(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2023-08-11) Amagat, Gala-AlexaA presentation at the "Strengthening Libraries' Emergency Preparedness and Response" Satellite Meeting, organized by the Preservation and Conservation Section and National Libraries Section.Examples of ALIPH Foundation Projects of restoration, digitization, and dissemination of documentary heritage.Item Ambassadors for Sustainable Development – Making Green Libraries Visible(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2022-09-26) Hauke, PetraAgainst the background of IFLA's involvement in the 2030 Agenda, this paper asks about the visible commitment of libraries and library associations as ambassadors for the dissemination of the SDGs. On the other hand, it also examines to what extent this commitment – if any – is reflected in national sustainability strategies and in strategies for education for sustainable development. The result makes clear that there is still room for development on the part of the library associations, but the libraries themselves must clearly communicate their commitment so that the public and political stakeholders are aware of it.Item Application of Agile Method in Building Innovative Library Services in University Libraries in Nigeria(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2023-09-04) Obuezie, Adaora Chigozie; Alex-Nmecha, Juliet C.This paper on the Application of the Agile Method in Building Innovative Library Services in University Libraries in Nigeria ascertained the use of the agile method in creating innovative library services, identified different types of innovative services created using the agile method, determined the benefits of using agile methods in creating the innovative library services and identified the challenges of using the agile method in creating innovative library services. To drive home, the stated objectives, this paper is a descriptive survey research design where a questionnaire and interview were used as the instruments for collection of data, and the data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics while the interview was given a thematic analysis. A total number of forty-one (41) Librarians made up the research population, 24 librarians from Prof. Festus Aghagbo Nwakor Library, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, and 17 librarians from Donald E.U. Ekong Library, University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Three librarians from each of the university libraries studied were randomly selected as the interviewee for the research. The findings of this research revealed that the agile method is very useful in the library and can be used for easy adaptation to technological advancement where innovative services such as capacity building and institutional repository services can be created. It was revealed to be beneficial in the development of new skills and building strong teams, although the method is faced with some challenges of dependencies between team members and less documentation among others. It was concluded that the agile method is an interesting method for building a collaborative healthy working environment. It is therefore recommended that the library management should adopt an agile method for the effective use and building of innovative, user-centered, and viable products and services in the library. Librarians should also be involved at every stage of the process to facilitate full acquaintance and ameliorate some challenges that may surface from the use of the method. Most IT practices that needed change benefited from a foundation that was laid well before the pandemic to allow for such change to happen in a brief period. One such change necessary was to have IT operations teams in libraries to work in a physically separate, but organizationally coherent, fashion. To adapt to the change required the implementation of methods and tools that allowed for new forms of autonomy, responsibility, and collaboration amongst IT operations teams. By applying agile principles and methods that were implemented at Stellenbosch University (SU) before the pandemic, the SU Library and Information Service’s Information Technology Services (ITS) operations team could respond to the change in a flexible and responsive way. Working and improving on what was already done, and known, about agile IT practices, the ITS team could adopt agile methods such as Kanban using the Jira project management software within a multi-disciplinary team that is responsible for IT operations management across an eco-system of technologies and service offerings. This allowed the team to take on an agile mindset to work, act and support the SU’s Library and Information Service in being responsive to service delivery and project implementation. This paper outlines specific agile methods and practices adopted by the ITS team, as well as the new agile project management methodology implemented to successfully implement vendor-driven software projects while still working to clear strategy-driven management priorities and reporting structures. More importantly, the paper shows that it is not needed to implement agile practices from scratch, because so many agile principles are already applied without practitioners actively realizing it.Item AR, VR, and immersive technologies: The new mode of learning and the key enablers in enhancing library services(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2023-07-24) Isa, IndrashahLibraries have always been important community hubs, offering resources and programming that benefit the public. This paper investigated availability and access to government research data in Nigeria to determine the implications in implementation of FOI law in the country. This study adopted webometric analysis approach to examine the websites of 34 selected websites of government key agencies. Findings reveal that only 26.5% of the 34 agencies have GRD in their websites while two of the agencies have no official and functional websites. Also only 10(29.4%) of the 34 agencies have evidence of using their website to address FOI requests and only 1(2.9%) has FOI Department, while only only 3(8.8%) have FOI portal in their websites. The paper concludes that the agencies have not shown enough commitments in implementation of FOI law using their websites.Item Breaking boundaries with VR: Enhancing learning experiences for fine arts students(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2023-07-21) Brousseau, Hélène; Ivan, Laura; Rivosecchi, MelissaThis paper presents the results of a pilot project implemented in the winter of 2023, when the Concordia University Library built customized access to a VR immersive experience for students in two Fine Arts courses. The pilot project explored the academic library’s integral role in making VR works accessible to students for applied integration in the classroom in consideration of learning outcomes. Through user experience surveys, valuable information was gathered to assess the project’s effectiveness in enhancing learning outcomes. It was found that the pilot facilitated learning experiences by: • Enhancing student engagement with course content (connecting VR activity to class readings/lectures and promoting active learning by exploring new mediums and building memorable experiences) • Generating discussion among students (exchanges on form/content, shared experiences, processing emotions emerging from the VR experience, and VR’s potential as an artistic medium) Survey results illustrated how opportunities, challenges, and risks were impacted by factors such as accessibility, space, equipment, and emotional/physiological responses. This paper presents insights related to technical installation, training, documentation, and the importance of having dedicated staff to assist users. Keywords: Virtual reality, experiential learning, student engagement, academic libraries, course reserves.Item Bridging the Staff Digital Divide in the Library Workplace with EDIA(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2022-09-07) Weeks, JoanAs libraries are emerging from the closures and hybrid work environments, many managers are finding the digital divide has widened among library workers at all levels. Systemic lack of equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility that already existed in the workplace prior to COVID, now is receiving heightened awareness, but needs to be addressed with concrete solutions. Organizational manifestations of the digital divide are explored, such as other library staff can do this work but your office isn’t equipped to do it either onsite or remotely, or lack of IT support and instruction that meets the needs of the staff. Additionally, individual manifestations of the digital gap are examined such as stereotypes “they are: _______” (fill in the blank) or mind-sets about IT failures, avoidance and hiding challenges. With an Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility (EDIA) lens, this paper looks at how equity can be achieved though opportunities for cross-organizational mentoring and resource sharing. Methods of building in diversity, not only in the instruction but also with the instructors, will be examined. Ways of breaking down barriers to inclusion of staff with weak IT skills on technology teams and committees in the library will be discussed. A particular focus will be on methods to promote a safe inclusive learning space that includes behind the scenes remedial help and confidence building. Multiple approaches to break down the accessibility barriers and challenges the staff have had not only with the technology, but with learning in the new hybrid environment will go beyond those with hearing or sight challenges and include those with linguistic and community issues. Individual development plans, diagnostic tests, and “just in time” instruction will be explored These strategies will also readily adapt to faculty students, and researchers as libraries open up and librarians need to develop new methods of library instruction grounded in EDIA.Item Bringing environmental awareness of public libraries to the 2020s -project: Case Libraries Carbon Footprint(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2022-09-14) Sonkkanen, LeilaBringing environmental awareness of public libraries to the 2020s –project (2020-2021) was a national research and training project funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture and administered by Helsinki City Library. Project started with a survey that looked at the level of environmental awareness of public libraries and simultaneously started measurements of libraries carbon footprint. The main objectives of this project were also to clarify the role of libraries in environmental awareness, sharing economy as well as UN Sustainable Development Goals. Also, to create a network of environmentally conscious librarians and free to use material bank were quite important aspects of the project. This pioneering research gathered carbon footprint data from 13 public libraries across Finland and it was the first national data collection and measurement process in which emission data from public libraries were studied together with experts. The aim was to identify the key factors involved in calculating the carbon footprint of libraries and to develop a tool that would allow public libraries to assess their environmental impact more widely. The project’s participatory approach aimed to raise libraries understanding of the positive and negative climate impacts of public libraries and to clarify the role of libraries in combating climate change. With the help of carbon calculation, the climate impacts can be made comparable, relevant emission sources can be identified and first and foremost library sector can pay attention to its climate impact and take actions to reduce it. One important highlight is that the results can be used as a reference for future calculations.Item Building a Strong Foundation: Selecting the Right Statistical Analysis and Methods(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2023-09-07) Scoulas, Jung MiAre you looking to enhance your statistical and evaluative methodologies for specific library services and resources? The collection was stored away in the University of Lagos Library archives from 1977 to 2012 when the Museum Section of the University of Lagos Library was inaugurated. At this point, the collection was organized for display to the public. It has largely been unstudied, except for an M.A. project by this author in 2009 and a few mentions of the collection in scholarly articles by a few other researchers. Using a case study approach, the article explores the potential of the University of Lagos Museum Collection in decolonising Nigerian minds and promoting a return to the roots and precolonial African ideals. It evaluates the impact of the museum’s constructions on Nigeria’s historical and cultural studies. The research data is gathered through the consultation of literature, the artworks in the collection, and interviews with actors in the field. The study scrutinizes the University of Lagos Museum collection as one of the surviving archives of the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC 77), by examining how the artworks in the University of Lagos Museum archives are being used as a means of reorientation of the postcolonial Nigerian mind. The study explores the historical significance of museum archives in shaping individual and collective memory, and how museum collections and displays can be used to challenge dominant narratives and ideologies. The findings suggest that museums can be powerful tools for decolonization, and the University of Lagos Museum Collection in particular holds great potential for this purpose. Overall, this article contributes to the ongoing discourse on decolonization and the role of museums in shaping national identity and memory. Keywords: Decolonisation, Museum, Identity, Sustainability, globalisationItem Building sustainability and open science in academic libraries through alliances: The case of Macao SAR(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2022-09-09) Pun, Priscilla Nga IanThe purpose of the alliance is usually to share resources and expertise, drive innovation and cultivate creativity, increase capabilities and scale, and so on. It helps libraries to improve resilience and sustainability especially in the times of public health, economic and climate crises. During the pandemic, the connection and experience sharing among libraries in responses to the Covid-19 was significant and helpful. It guided libraries with the most effective way to manage the pandemic crisis. Library alliances and associations at various levels have played an important role in it. Macao Special Administrative Region aims at building into a world-class tourism and leisure centre, as well as a commerce and trade cooperation service platform between China and Lusophone countries. A number of important library alliances had been established in Macao during the recent years. All of these alliances intend to enhance the regional and global communication and cooperation. Open science is emerging and essential in higher education and scientific research. It broadens the dissemination and engagement in science, as well as emphasizes on openness and sustainable development of scholarship. To promote open science with alliances is of critical value in libraries and for library sustainability.Item Buried in the Archives: Telling the Forgotten Stories of Poor Farm Residents in St. Clair County(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2023-09-05) Curtiss, JanetFor many years, the history of the St. Clair County Poor Farm relied heavily on oral history, with dates and facts that may or may not have been accurate regarding the early years of its existence. The purpose of this research is not to discount oral history, but rather to give a framework of facts that can support the valuable stories passed down through the years. The names and stories of those whose circumstances in life made them temporarily or permanently dependent on social welfare programs have remained largely invisible in the published material on St. Clair County’s history. The people who lived at the Poor Farm, whether for a short while or a lifetime, are an underrepresented population in St. Clair County’s history; often their stories and lives have been forgotten and are undocumented. The accessibility of this particular set of records allows a glimpse into their lives and the circumstances in which they found themselves and creates a broader perspective of the history of the county and the people who lived there in the early years of its development.
