    IFLA Journal. July 2002
    (K. G. Saur Verlag GmbH, 2002-07) IFLA Headquarters; Parker, Stephen; Fuchs, Heinz; Witt, Maria; Cadell, Patrick; Seidelin, Susanne; Schleihagen, Barbara; Hamilton, Stuart; Rodenhuis, Willem; Parker, Stephen; Shimmon, Ross
This issue of the IFLA Journal explores critical developments in global librarianship, with a focus on professional training, information access, and cultural preservation. Articles cover diverse topics such as leadership training for library and information professionals in the Arab world, challenges of managing hybrid libraries in the UK, and the role of non-professionals in Russian libraries. Several pieces address the shifting landscape of cataloguing, including the evolution of MARC formats and authority control. Contributions also examine the preservation of oral traditions in South Africa and accessibility for the visually impaired. Reports highlight international cooperation, including updates from IFLA’s sections and projects like FAIFE and ALP. Together, these contributions reflect the library community’s commitment to equitable information services, technological adaptation, and the safeguarding of cultural heritage. The issue emphasizes collaboration, professional development, and the need for libraries to evolve as dynamic, inclusive institutions in an increasingly digital world.

Richtlinien für Audiovisuelle und Multimedia-Materialien in Bibliotheken und anderenInstitutionen
(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2004-08) Royan, Bruce; Cremer, Monika; Cremer, Monika; Franzke, Peter; Fuchs, Heinz; Wiegandt, Birgit
This set of guidelines, for audiovisual and multimedia materials in libraries of all kinds and other appropriate institutions, is the product of many years of consultation and collaborative effort. As early as 1972, The UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Public Library Manifesto had stressed the need for audiovisual media in public libraries, both in adult and in children's services. The following year, a Round Table on Audiovisual Material was created within IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) to cover all "non-book materials", or--according to another definition--all documents requiring equipment for their consultation. In 1982, this Round Table was asked to consider standards for the provision of audiovisual materials and equipment in public libraries, and the first edition of the IFLA Guidelines was born. A second, revised, edition was planned for 1987, but this was never published. In this paper the term audiovisual and multimedia will be used for contents of the collections of all types of library and information services regarding sound, images and multimedia. (Microforms are not included in these guidelines.) All issues relating to sound, still and moving images, and multimedia documents and services (such as children's libraries and language centers), collection development, cataloguing, conservation, and access including Internet will be treated.
