Croatian Public Libraries in uncertain times - Creative and Innovative Library Programs and Activities in the Year of Reading 2021
(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2022-11-07) Gabriel, Dunja Marija
The Government of the Republic of Croatia declared 2021 the Year of Reading as part of the implementation of the National Strategy for the Promotion of Reading. The National and University Library in Zagreb was in charge of collecting data on the type and number of programs, activities and events that are planned to be implemented in the Year of Reading 2021 and the results of the implementation of those programs. Library activities that marked the work of Croatian public libraries during the coronavirus pandemic in 2021 are: - adaptation for the use of new digital information and communication technologies that came to life during the pandemic, - introduction of innovative library programs and activities, - cooperation of libraries with other institutions, organizations and associations that contributes to better visibility of libraries in the community, - more active involvement of patrons in library programs which contribute to strengthening the connection of libraries with patrons and the community for better mutual understanding. The new situation caused by the pandemic of coronavirus has encouraged librarians to think differently, resulting in innovative library programs and activities in public libraries that take place online or live. The number of innovative library programs that were planned to be implemented in Croatia in 2021 was 1,277, but the total number of programs that were implemented in all Croatian counties was 1,740, which is 26.6% more than was planned. Since the innovative programs and activities in 2021 were well received by the library patrons, their implementation continued in 2022. Once again, a time of great uncertainty and confusion has proven the key role of libraries in providing access to reliable information and their importance to meet the cultural, educational and social interests of patrons and communities.

National Campaign "I Wish to Read Too!" is being carried out for 5 years. It demonstrated that libraries contribute in achievement of growing literacy and general awareness of society as a whole, and involvement of citizens into society equally for people with reading difficulties and dyslexia. Special effort has been made during the pandemic to create virtual content as part of regular Campaign activities.
