Sensory Toys and Assistive Resources Service
(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2022-10-06) Kelly, Theresa; Percival, Hazel
The sensory toys and assistive resources collection is a free service offering a lending collection of resources to support children and young people with additional needs. The collection was developed through consultation and collaboration with local healthcare professionals and families. It offers resources to assist individuals living with the challenges of extra needs to participate in learning, skills development, and personal growth. The resources support development of gross motor skills, fine motor skills, speech, language and social skills, play and life skills and sensory and tactile progress. Sensory toys develop a child or young person’s senses through objects, lighting, and music. They benefit children and young people with limited communication skills. Assistive resources are items, equipment, and technology that can develop and improve the functional capabilities (ability to carry out tasks and activities) of a person with a disability. People living, working, or attending schools in County Wexford can apply for a STAR card enabling them to reserve and borrow all resources in the STAR collection from any Wexford library and mobile library branch. Wexford Library Service STAR collection is delivering accessibility and opportunities for everyone to fulfil their potential in these uncertain times.
