MedievalMe – a serious medieval game!
(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2023-09-25) Koning, Rianne; Frequin, Sanne
MedievalMe is an engaging serious game designed for secondary school students, aged 15 to 18. In this game they conduct their own research on a mysterious medieval manuscript. Through the implementation of virtual reality (VR) technology, the manuscript is brought to life within the game. By integrating heritage into the classroom, MedievalMe allows students to directly interact with cultural artifacts. The game is web-based and free, encouraging accessibility for all participants. It can be played on mobile devices. With a setup time of only 5 minutes, teachers can seamlessly initiate a new game without any additional preparation. The main objective of MedievalMe is to highlight the significance of interdisciplinary approaches. Students from various disciplines, including science, history, and language sciences, collaborate to solve the challenges presented in the game. MedievalMe comprises multiple rounds, each consisting of two mini-games that unveil valuable hints to progress towards answering the main question about the manuscript. The students' rankings are displayed on the digiboard, enabling the teacher to monitor progress and encouraging healthy competition among different groups. Overall, MedievalMe provides an immersive and collaborative platform that merges education, heritage, and scientific research, captivating students and promoting their research skills in an interactive and engaging manner.
