    IFLA in the International Arena before the Second World War: Evidence from the Actes du Comité International des Bibliothèques, and the Digitized League of Nations Archives

    Did IFLA play a significant international role before the Second World War? This paper reports on an exploration of two sources of information on IFLA’s international activities during 1928-1939: the proceedings of the annual meetings of the International Library Committee, and files relating to entities of the League of Nations that were concerned with libraries and bibliography. Accessing IFLA’s proceedings, and finding relevant documents in the League of Nations archives turned out to be challenging. This paper is primarily about these sources, but offers some tentative findings. It appears that IFLA was more actively and productively engaged internationally than had thought, engaging particularly with the Committee of Library Experts of the League’s International Committee for Intellectual Cooperation. Both the Actes du Comité international des Bibliothèques and the League of Nations archives hold a treasure trove of data for historians of IFLA, librarianship and documentation, and the international cultural and intellectual milieu during the inter-war period.     This special issue, dedicated to library history, draws upon papers presented at the August 2023 IFLA Library History Special Interest Group (SIG) satellite meeting in Mons, Belgium titled “Preserving our origins: Approaches to the organization, curation, and historiography of the record of national and international organizations in libraries, information, and documentation” along with general submissions to the journal that aligned well with the issue’s theme. The discussions presented at the Library History meeting in Mons emphasised the importance of capturing both celebrated and overlooked aspects of the record-keeping processes of library associations, as well as key themes relevant to library history more generally. To facilitate a more coherent understanding, the articles presented can be organized into three distinct categories: Archival Practices and Institutional Memory, International Collaboration and the Role of Libraries in Global Information Systems, and Libraries as Cultural Institutions.

    Towards IFLA's centenary: historical sources and themes

    This paper is intended as background for members of IFLA’s Special Interest Group (SIG) for Library History (LibHist), and for others who may be contemplating conducting research on IFLA with a view to the celebration of IFLA’s centenary in 2027. Specifically, the SIG anticipates compiling a commemorative volume of contributed chapters which will not only celebrate IFLA’s achievements, but also examine some themes critically. An outline is given of the sources that can be used for the historiography of IFLA, and a list of themes that may be considered for chapters of the proposed commemorative volume is suggested. Unpublished documents about IFLA may be found in IFLA’s own archives, held in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (Royal Library) in the Hague, in the UNESCO archives in Paris, and elsewhere. IFLA’s own publications are important sources of information about it. The records of IFLA’s variously named sessions, general councils, conferences and congresses are especially important for the earlier years. Much information on IFLA’s activities and achievements can be gleaned from IFLA publications, such as guidelines and standards, policy statements, and reports on the work of IFLA’s various professional units and strategic advisory committees, the IFLA publications series, and report series. A good deal of this material is published on IFLA’s websites, current and archived. There is much published literature about IFLA. A number of historical accounts are cited, among other published articles, books, book chapters, and theses in which IFLA is referred to. The paper concludes with a listing of suggested themes for research on IFLA.
