“This intense desire to know the world”: Cultural competency as a personal and professional disposition in collection development practices

dc.description.abstractIn a mixed methods dissertation study investigating the factors that influence the selection and collection development of multicultural children’s literature (Garrison, 2012), qualitative findings revealed the challenges public librarians face in their efforts to create culturally relevant collections for their increasingly diverse communities, often not representative of their own personal background, knowledge or experiences. Using a conceptual framework for cultural competence for library and information science professionals (Montiel Overall, 2009), this research highlights cultural competence and responsiveness in this sample of U.S. public librarians according to cognitive, interpersonal, and environmental domains. The experiences and reflections of these librarians support cultural competency as both a personal disposition and a professional disposition in collection development practices. The sociological nature of these findings holds implications and significance for library education in developing and promoting strong cultural competency in library students and practitioners.en
dc.description.abstractEn un estudio para una tesis, realizado por diversos métodos, que investiga los factores que influyen en la selección y desarrollo de la colección de literatura infantil multicultural (Garrison, 2012), los resultados cualitativos revelaron los desafíos a los que se enfrentan los bibliotecarios de bibliotecas públicas en sus esfuerzos por crear colecciones culturalmente relevantes para sus cada vez más diversas comunidades, a menudo no representativas de su bagaje personal, conocimiento o experiencias propios. Usando un marco conceptual para la competencia cultural para los profesionales de las biblioteconomía y ciencias de la documentación (Montiel Overall, 2009), esta investigación destaca la competencia y sensibilidad culturales en este muestreo realizado entre bibliotecarios de bibliotecas públicas estadounidenses, según los dominios cognoscitivos, interpersonales, y ambientales. Las experiencias y las reflexiones de estos bibliotecarios apoyan la competencia cultural como una disposición tanto personal como profesional en las prácticas de desarrollo de la colección. La naturaleza sociológica de estos resultados conlleva implicaciones y significados para la enseñanza de la biblioteconomía a la hora de desarrollar y promover una competencia cultural fuerte en estudiantes y profesionales de la biblioteconomía.es
