Authors and Authorities in Post-RDA Library Systems: A Case Study

Abstract

Persons are complex, and their representation in library authority records is becoming increasingly complex through the addition of attributes under RDA rules. This case study, using a longitudinal approach, examines attributes in authority records from the Merlin Cluster of academic libraries at both six months (i.e. September 2013) and one year (i.e. April 2014), after the official adoption of RDA to assess trends in attribute field usage.

This study revealed that after one year of RDA cataloging,87.58 percent had no attributes at all, but that percentage was down -2.43% from the percentage at six months. Almost 8% of authority records had at least one attribute after a year; and almost 5% had two or more attributes. In terms of the attributes recorded, dates recorded in the 046 of authority records were the most common with 7.1 percent of records including them after six months of RDA cataloging and nearly 10 percent of authority records including them after one year of RDA. The 678 (Biographical or Historical Data) and the 375 (Gender) were the next most common attributes supplied.

Overall, attributes supplied tend to be sparse and focus on English-speakers, males, and those associated with universities in some way. Although this analysis investigates the metadata quality indicator of completeness for attributes in post-RDA authority records, in the process of investigating aspects of the demographics of persons in the authority file, a few informal observations came forth.

Les personnes sont complexes et leur représentation dans les notices d’autorité des bibliothèques est rendue de plus en plus complexe par l’ajout d’attributs conformément aux règles de RDA. Cette étude de cas examine, en utilisant une approche longitudinale, les attributs des notices d’autorité des bibliothèques universitaires du Merlin Cluster au bout de six mois, puis d’un an, d’adoption officielle de RDA, pour évaluer les tendances dans l’utilisation des champs d’attributs.

Cette étude a révélé qu’au bout d’un an de catalogage en RDA, 87,58 % des notices n’avaient aucun attribut, mais que ce pourcentage était en baisse de -2,43% par rapport à ce qu’il était au bout de 6 mois. Presque 8% des notices d’autorité avaient au moins un attribut au bout d’un an ; et presque 5% en avaient au moins deux. En ce qui concerne les attributs renseignés, les dates enregistrées dans le 046 des notices d’autorité étaient les plus répandues avec 7,1% de notices en contenant au bout de six mois de catalogage en RDA, et presque 10% de notices en contenant au bout d’un an de catalogage en RDA. Venaient ensuite comme attributs les plus renseignés le 678 (données biographiques ou historiques) et le 375 (sexe).

Globalement les attributs renseignés sont rares et concentrés sur les personnes anglophones, de sexe masculin et celles ayant un lien quel qu’il soit, avec les universités. Bien que le titre de cette enquête soit l’analyse de la qualité des métadonnées à travers le degré de complétude des attributs dans les notices d’autorité après l’adoption de RDA, on a pu faire quelques observations informelles au cours de l’enquête portant sur des points relatifs à la démographie des personnes du fichier d’autorité.
