South Africa's indigenous languages embody rich cultural knowledge, historical memory, and diverse literary traditions. The National Library of South Africa (NLSA) preserves this heritage through extensive collections of published and unpublished materials that document the development and continued vitality of the country's nine official indigenous languages. This poster traces the journey of indigenous languages from oral traditions and early linguistic documentation to the emergence of African-language publishing, highlighting significant milestones such as early newspapers, literary works, and the growth of the Black Press. It further demonstrates how literature has reflected changing social, political, and cultural realities, while showcasing the NLSA's role in preserving these voices through legal deposit, digitisation, and initiatives such as the Reprint of the Classics Project, which restored 93 important indigenous-language titles for public access. By combining historical context with examples from the NLSA's collections, the poster illustrates how indigenous languages remain living heritage that continues to support scholarship, cultural identity, education, and community memory. Through preservation, access, and ongoing collection development, the NLSA ensures that these languages and the knowledge they embody remain accessible and relevant for present and future generations.
