Content-based image recognition on printed broadside ballads: The Bodleian Libraries' ImageMatch Tool

Abstract

This paper introduces the Bodleian Ballads ImageMatch tool, developed by the Visual Geometry Group of the University of Oxford’s Department of Software Engineering on behalf of the Bodleian Libraries. ImageMatch was designed to assist with the cataloguing and study of the pictorial content of early British printed broadside ballads, but has potential value for many other kinds of printed material. The paper outlines the nature of the materials to which ImageMatch has been applied; describes how the tool works and what it can do; and will offers some discussion on the benefits of ImageMatch’s for image-cataloguing in Rare Books collections.

Este trabajo introduce la herramienta ImageMatch de las Baladas archivadas en la Biblioteca Bodleiana, desarrollada por el Grupo de Geometría Visual del Departamento de Ingeniería de Software de la Universidad de Oxford por encargo de las Bibliotecas Bodleianas. ImageMatch fue diseñada como herramienta de apoyo para la catalogación y el estudio del contenido pictórico de baladas británicas antiguas impresas en volantes, pero podría utilizarse también para muchos otros tipos de material impreso. El trabajo describe la naturaleza de los materiales a los cuales se ha aplicado ImageMatch, el modo en que la herramienta funciona y lo que puede hacer, y analiza los beneficios de ImageMatch para catalogar imágenes en colecciones de Libros Poco Comunes.

Cette communication présente le programme « Bodleian ballads ImageMatch » développé par le Groupe de géométrie visuelle du Département d’ingénierie Software de l’université d’Oxford à l’attention des bibliothèques bodléiennes. ImageMatch a été conçu pour faciliter le catalogage et l’étude du contenu iconographique des anciennes chansons de colportage imprimées en Grande-Bretagne, mais son application peut se révéler utile pour bien d’autres types de documents imprimés. Cette communication définit la nature des documents sur lesquels ImageMatch a été appliqué ; elle décrit son fonctionnement, présente ses potentialités et propose quelques pistes sur ses avantages pour le catalogage d’images des collections de livres rares.
