The project “Safeguarding the manuscripts of Timbuktu”: a synergic approach to the preservation of written cultural heritage

Abstract

The paper presents the project “Safeguarding the manuscripts of Timbuktu” coordinated by the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC), University of Hamburg. The project was set up following the dramatic events of 2012 that led to the evacuation of many manuscript collections from Timbuktu to Bamako where the manuscripts have since suffered from environmental hazards and inappropriate storage. The paper discusses the project’s aims and methods, challenges and solutions, with a focus on the issues of preservation and accessibility for research. The collaborative approach that was adopted at different stages of the project is addressed by highlighting the importance of synergy between “operating” measures and educational initiatives both from Malian and international institutions.En esta ponencia se presenta el proyecto “Salvaguardia de los manuscritos de Tombuctú”, coordinado por el Centro para el Estudio de las Culturas Manuscritas (CSMC por sus siglas en inglés) de la Universidad de Hamburgo. El proyecto surgió a raíz de los dramáticos sucesos de 2012 que provocaron la evacuación de numerosas colecciones de manuscritos desde Tombuctú a Bamako, donde están expuestos a riesgos medioambientales y a un almacenamiento inadecuado. Se detallan los objetivos, métodos, retos y soluciones que plantea el proyecto, haciendo especial hincapié en los aspectos de preservación y accesibilidad a la investigación. La causa del enfoque colaborativo que se adoptó en sus diferentes etapas fue la necesidad de subrayar la importancia de la sinergia entre las medidas “operativas” y las iniciativas culturales, tanto por parte de las instituciones malinienses como internacionales.
