Exploring the role of public libraries in supporting intergenerational literacies through ICTs

Abstract

Research has shown the important benefits of early childhood education to individuals and society. This paper provides the rationale for a study aiming to explore the role of public libraries in supporting efforts to develop intergenerational learning through ICT in Taiwan. Substantial research has evidenced the benefits of integrating ICT into young children’s daily learning environment when used carefully and appropriately. Indeed, family interventions and high quality educational provisions in the nursery have been shown to have a big impact on compensating for early disadvantage. However, limited research has investigated the role of public libraries in supporting efforts to develop intergenerational learning through ICT. In order to fill the gap, this is an exploratory, qualitative study of interventions (involving e.g. storytimes and shared reading with ICT) developed by the National Library of Public Information in Taiwan in collaboration with the research team. The study will gather data from online materials (through blogging), semi-structured interviews and direct observations. Additionally, social media (e.g. Wordpress, Facebook and Twitter) are used to help develop the home learning environment and support a community of practice in intergenerational learning both in the library and at home. The rationale behind the choice of the National Library is that it aims for promoting lifelong learning and reading through virtual and physical resources, thus helping bridge the digital divide. The viewpoints of young children, parents, caregivers and librarians will be captured. The data collected will be qualitatively analysed, using the thematic analysis procedure. Triangulation of the data sources will be employed to enhance the reliability and validity of research findings. This research draws upon studies and methods from library science and early childhood education. It is intended that this interdisciplinary study will provide the foundations for further research. The findings of this study are intended to provide a model for implementation in the 520 public libraries in Taiwan, to promote intergenerational learning through ICT. The findings are intended to advance our knowledge of young children’s interaction with adults as they engage with ICT in the library and at home, and should be of value to policy makers, parents, professional educators and librarians in these areas.
Las investigaciones han demostrado los importantes beneficios de la educación preescolar para los individuos y la sociedad. Este documento proporciona los fundamentos para un estudio con el fin de explorar el papel de las bibliotecas públicas en apoyo a los esfuerzos para desarrollar el aprendizaje intergeneracional a través de las TIC en Taiwán. Una cantidad substancial de investigación ha puesto en evidencia los beneficios de la integración de las TIC en el ambiente de aprendizaje diario de los niños cuando se utilizan cuidadosamente y de manera apropiada. De hecho, las intervenciones familiares y las provisiones educativas de alta calidad en el jardín de infancia han demostrado tener un gran impacto en la compensación de desventajas tempranas. Sin embargo, han sido limitadas las investigaciones que han estudiado el papel de las bibliotecas públicas en apoyo a los esfuerzos para desarrollar el aprendizaje intergeneracional a través de las TIC. Con el fin de llenar dicho vacío, este es un estudio exploratorio, cualitativo, de las intervenciones (como por ejemplo la hora del cuento y lectura compartida con TIC) desarrolladas por la Biblioteca Nacional de Información Pública en Taiwan, en colaboración con el equipo de investigación. El estudio reunirá datos de materiales en línea (a través de blogs), entrevistas semiestructuradas y observaciones directas. Además, se utilizan los medios sociales (por ejemplo, Wordpress, Facebook y Twitter) para ayudar a desarrollar el ambiente de aprendizaje en el hogar y apoyar una comunidad de prácticas en aprendizaje intergeneracional tanto en la biblioteca como en casa. El fundamento lógico de la elección de la biblioteca nacional es que su objetivo consiste en promover el aprendizaje permanente y la lectura a través de recursos físicos y virtuales, ayudando así a superar la brecha digital. El punto de vista de los niños, padres, cuidadores y bibliotecarios será capturado. Los datos recogidos serán analizados cualitativamente, utilizando el procedimiento de análisis temático. La triangulación de las fuentes de datos será empleada para mejorar la fiabilidad y la validez de los resultados de la investigación. Esta investigación se basa en estudios y métodos de Biblioteconomía y Documentación y Educación preescolar. Se pretende que este estudio interdisciplinar proporcione las bases para nuevas investigaciones. Los resultados de este estudio pretenden proporcionar un modelo para su aplicación en las 520 bibliotecas públicas de Taiwán, para promover el aprendizaje intergeneracional a través de las TIC. Los resultados han de servir para avanzar en nuestro conocimiento de la interacción de los niños con adultos al manejar las TIC en la biblioteca y en el hogar, y se espera que resulten valiosos para los encargados de formular políticas, los padres, los educadores profesionales y bibliotecarios en estas áreas.
