Abstract
Since 2010 the German National Library provides the German National Bibliography and the authority file GND (Gemeinsame Normdatei) as Linked Data. Following years of development and growth, the service has reached a point where it is challenging and complex to implement further adjustments.
This presentation will begin by introducing our Linked Open Data ecosystem, including an overview of the data and publication workflows. We will analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the workflows and software.
We present our approach to renew the Linked Data Service step-by-step. The key aspects of this process are to automate and adapt in order to achieve a higher quality of data and service. Some steps that were previously completed manually have already been replaced by automated processes. Continuous integration is a crucial element in the new setup. Our objective is to automate the majority of the data production workflow, allowing us to dedicate our resources to quality assurance. We implement a central point for conversion rules embedded in SHACL shapes. The SHACL Shapes are used for quality assurance purposes and are used to automatically generate a documentation of the data production process. At present we are extracting further rules from the existing production process to close gaps in its documentation and quality assurance.
To enhance the overall service quality of our data service we aim to improve the findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability (FAIR) by providing a SPARQL service. Currently, we are evaluating available SPARQL engines.
Overall, we are working to improve the data production through the extraction and adaptation of rules for automated quality assurance and documentation generation, as well as the usability of the service regarding its FAIR properties by providing a SPARQL service in the future.
