Item Creating and Maintaining a Safer Online World for Children and Young Adults in Libraries: A Report on the 2021 Safer Internet Day Baseline Survey for the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA)(International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2023-02-28) Martens, Marianne; Rankin, Carolynn; Kolarić, AlicaThis report provides the results of a baseline survey of safe internet practices in libraries for children and young adults around the world. This survey was created by members of IFLA’s Libraries for Children and Young Adults (C&YA) Section, with the goal of finding out: What would help librarians create and maintain a safer online world for children and young people? Since 2004, Safer Internet Day has been organised annually and is observed in about 200 countries. The campaign calls upon all stakeholders to join together to make the internet a safer and better place for all, and especially for children and young people. One night, over dinner, we started talking about intellectual freedom, censorship, and book banning. Our Australian and Norwegian members said that they organized exhibits in their libraries about "Books Banned in the United States." Those of us from the United States were suddenly aware of how what is happening in the US is perceived around the world. Of course, challenges and book bans are not isolated to the United States. As librarians, we believe that the freedom to read is a core tenant of democracy. We decided to create a special edition newsletter in conjunction with Banned Books Week (October 1-7th, 2023) that would look at censorship and book challenges worldwide. This newsletter contains articles from England, France, Kenya, Norway, Thailand, and three from the United States.
