‘BACA’ (Reading): Its birth and journey throughout Malaysia

Abstract

The publication of the book 'Baca' is an initiative of The Librarians’ Association of Malaysia (PPM) and the Kuala Lumpur World Book Capital (KLWBC) 2020 Secretariat in conjunction with KLWBC 2020. The special feature is an infographic display for each chapter and various interesting photos on reading activities. The 136-page book contains 7 chapters, inclusively arranged consisting of about reading, libraries in Malaysia, family libraries, bibliotherapy and activities organized by PPM during the celebration. It also includes words of wisdom by outstanding librarians and academia involved in the librarianship field. In spite of the challenges faced during the Covid-19 pandemic, this book was successfully published, and the official launching ceremony was held on 2 June 2022 at Mayor's Courtyard, Kuala Lumpur. A total of 1,500 books, 80 buntings, 70 posters and 1,000 bookmarks on Why do you need to read had been printed. The promotion of the book to PPM members and community was held live at FB PPM on 15 July 2022. The Roadshows were held nationwide from 17 July 2022 to publicise the book. Total of 34 panels from the book committee, writers and guests were involved. This roadshow aims to promote the utilization of printed and digital formats which elaborate about each chapter as well as introducing the book team members who are also amongst librarians and book writers. As of 25 July 2023, a total of 2,309 participants attended the Roadshows in 17 locations in Malaysia. The eBook usage in digital format is 7,226 (downloaded), 9,044 (views) and 12,771 (flipbook views). The publication serves as a guide to increase interest and inculcate reading culture in the community.
