Europe knows all too well the dead end that is war and the tragic and irreversible consequences it entails. Thus, the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) will participate in all support initiatives in favour of Ukraine. It will strive to pay homage to Ukrainian culture in its manifestations, to assist our colleagues, particularly in their missions to safeguard heritage, and to encourage the reception of those who could take refuge in France.” This statement was made in March 2022 by Laurence Engel, President of the BnF. Since then, the Library has been continuously working with its Ukrainian counterpart and other Ukrainian institutions, but also with French libraries and peers to implement a series of initiatives in solidarity with the Ukrainian people to: • Welcome Ukrainian colleagues, refugees and officials (with the support of ALIPH and the French Ministry of Culture); • Safeguard Ukrainian heritage and libraries (with ICOM and SUCCHO); • Record the conflict for future generations (with IIPC); • Highlight Ukrainian archives and collections within the BnF; • Host cultural events to bring Ukrainian culture and history forward (with Inalco, BULAC and the support of the Ukrainian Embassy in France).
