Abstract

A recent case in Münster, Germany, involved the local public library labeling two books as containing controversial content that denied historical facts. The library defended this action as part of its educational mission and based on freedom of information and expression. One author objected, but the Münster Administrative Court ruled in April 2025 that such critical labeling is legal if presented objectively. This case raises broader questions about the role of libraries: should they simply provide access to information or also guide readers through contextualization and curation?
