Research on the Artificial Intelligence Literacy Framework for Librarians

Abstract

In the era of intelligence, the extensive application of AI in libraries has imposed new demands on librarians’ professional competencies. This study aims to construct a framework for librarians’ AI literacy, providing a reference for talent recruitment, performance evaluation, and professional development in libraries. Based on the theory of competence and grounded in the actual application scenarios of AI in libraries, this research employs thematic analysis to systematically review 83 influential AI competency frameworks, standards, policies, and academic publications from around the world. A general set of elements was identified, consisting of 3 core dimensions: cognitive understanding, operational practice, and value orientation. These dimensions reflect both the essential attributes of AI literacy and the contextual requirements of library practice. Building on these findings, the study proposes an AI literacy framework for librarians comprising 2 main modules: a general literacy module and a professional literacy module. The former includes 3 dimensions—value orientation, general knowledge and skills, and professional development—while the latter focuses on AI literacy requirements related to practical application in various library functions.
