Abstract

The University of the Philippines - College of Engineering redefines the academic library as a safe, inclusive, and user-centric space that supports learning, well-being, and collaboration. Hence, the establishment of the Student Wellness (SWELL) facility, which responds to the increasing mental health challenges among students by providing a dedicated space for counseling sessions, recreational activities, and relaxation. SWELL exemplifies a strong culture of collaboration and partnership, bringing together community members, including mental health professionals, faculty, alumni, and administrators through counselling, mentorship, and resource mobilization. Building on this foundation, the “Express to Destress” was launched as the library’s flagship program to provide the latest interventions through a multi-session workshop covering art therapy, stress management, mindfulness, and healthy and nutritious cooking—particularly for student dormers who were isolated during the pandemic. Expanding this initiative to a wider audience, the program offers more focused and immersive art therapy activities, complemented by the integration of Human Library sessions that promote empathy through meaningful dialogue with persons with disabilities, the LGBTQ+ community, and students undergoing mental health conditions.
