Abstract

Charge to the 1993 Mission: "During a two-week visit to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban the mission will assess the operation of all types of libraries in order to ascertain to what extent library services in the institutions visited are open to all population groups in the community, employ representatives from all these groups and offer relevant materials and services to all sectors of the population. Professional education in the library and information field will be reviewed from the same point of view. Through discussions with representatives of the leading organisations in the library community of South Africa the mission will determine what plans and mechanisms for effecting change are operating that will encourage the adoption of non-racial policies and practices in South African libraries. Organisations to be consulted will include, but not be limited to: Association of African Librarians of South Africa (ALASA), Library and Information Workers Organisation (LIWO), South African Institute for Librarianship and Information Science (SAILIS) and the new TRANSLIS organisation."
