Book Installation for E-generation: Linking Young Readers and Books through Modern Technologies

Abstract

One of the biggest modern library’s challenges is indulging young customers, especially teenagers. The general characteristic of young users is that they expect to access the information quickly and easily. For this purpose, the Public library “Vladislav Petkovic Dis” initiated a project in 2016. The objective was to recommend invaluable reading titles through contemporary communication technology- cell phones.

The librarians equipped the display bookcases with carefully selected credible and captivating books. The displays are placed at the hectic downtown areas of Cacak, Serbia, where substantial portion of young population were passing by. The alluring book trailer was designed for each of the suggested titles, and posted to the both official project website and YouTube. Each showcase was labeled with a QR code. Curious passers would strike up the conversation, scan the code and open a book trailer on their cell phones. The remarkable success of the project led to expansion of teenage library usage, founding of Young Readers Club, and enhancement of cultural environment.
