Abstract

To evoke interests in maker culture and boost innovation in social development, Guangzhou Library has been holding maker contest since its makerspace opened in 2016, and will continue as a sustaining platform for local makers and makers-to-be as they grow. Distinct from many other maker contests or competitions worldwide that limit to existing makers, the 2017 maker contest from June to November lends itself to a variety of applicants, providing up to 120-hour training programmes for both beginners and the experienced participants, and facilitating the creation of around 300 pieces of works within 3 months. Integrated into the Guangzhou International Innovation Festival, this welcoming maker contest also bridges the gap between pioneering change makers and the general public. The important message is therefore delivered to the public that everyone can be a maker, despite of age, background and former experience.
