Openness is the core ethos of science, aimed at promoting broader and deeper collaboration. The development of Open Science has largely broken down paywalls to research outputs. Open access journals, preprint platforms and open data initiatives have laid the foundation for a collaborative research ecosystem. Although Open Science has eased traditional constraints on research collaboration, building a fully open environment covering the whole research process—from idea generation to data analysis and publication—remains a major challenge. Key issues include: Open Research Workflow: All research procedures are open and shareable, including unsuccessful trials. Open Science Infrastructure: Build user-friendly infrastructure supporting openness throughout the full research lifecycle. Open Science Incentives & Rewards: Policies boost collaborative research, granting recognition to all participants involved in research. Risk Prevention: Mitigate risks such as data copyright issues arising from open sharing. Stakeholder Interest Coordination: Balance interests of all open science participants: funders, publishers, libraries, researchers, etc. Transitioning to a research ecosystem where open science practices are the default will require more widespread systemic change. Collaborative research demands concerted global efforts from the entire scientific community under the overarching goal of openness.
