LAC Libraries: the impact of the copyright legislation in Latin America and the Caribbean region

Abstract

Latin America and the Caribbean region is known for its concentration of countries with no or few limitations and exceptions to copyright and related rights for libraries, that would enable them to offer access to information and quality of service needed in the current digital age. Looking to offer qualified and updated insight about this situation, the IFLA Standing Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean (IFLA LAC) conducted the project “Impact of the copyright legislation on libraries in Latin America and the Caribbean” which aims at identifying and recording the main difficulties, problems and situations that libraries are facing in the work situation and when offering quality services in the digital era. After finishing the project and looking at the results of so many countries, it was time to work on those national reporters to elaborated a condensed and comparative view from those countries and finalize it in a good diagnostic of the region. So, this diagnostic will be presented in a final infographic showing also the libraries situation in front of the copyright local law from 15 countries: Argentina, Bolívia, Brasil, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, México, Nicaragua, Panamá, Peru, Dominican Republic and Trinidad y Tobago.
