Abstract
The present year has brought many opportunities for libraries’ continued engagement for the support of a more inclusive information society. As vital hubs of knowledge and digital access, libraries continue to be uniquely positioned to advance the WSIS agenda, contributing to sustainable development and promoting access to information for human well-being. Throughout this year, libraries have made significant progress as they continue to expand their role as both physical and digital knowledge hubs for communities worldwide, helping bridge the digital divide, particularly in underserved communities. This year, IFLA has put a special emphasis on supporting the library network’s capacity on digital matters, on improving critical media literacy skills and in seeking innovative ways to expand our impact within the WSIS framework. Emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, have brought both opportunities and challenges for libraries as librarians acquire new skills to adapt and make the most of these. Censorship and misinformation remain as significant obstacles, threatening the freedom of expression and access to information that libraries advocate worldwide. In 2024, libraries stood at the forefront of efforts to protect this right, often under challenging conditions. As we approach 2025, we look forward to continuing our efforts in ensuring that all individuals have access to the necessary skills and resources to thrive in a digital society. The progress made during this and previous years has set a solid foundation to amplify IFLA’s work along the WSIS action lines during the coming years.
