| dc.description.abstract | Our survey of perceptions of IFLA’s current volunteer model received 475 responses from over 100 countries, covering all regions. It suggests a broadly positive experience, with the unique role of IFLA in making it possible to build networks and take action internationally a major draw. Nonetheless, there are differences in what people value according to their position, region and more. Among frustrations, the difficulty of getting onto committees is most significant, followed by worry about the cost of attending congresses and the perceived to speak English to engage. Once again, views are different, with existing committee members more worried about bureaucracy, workload and uneven engagement, while others think more about workload and recognition. Proposals for how to improve the model include a focus on making funding available, stronger communication about role expectations, recognition, and more flexibility, both in terms of the structure of committees in general and in individual volunteering opportunities. | |
