| dc.description.abstract | ProgrammePublic libraries are increasingly recognised as catalysts for lifelong learning, cultural preservation, and community empowerment. The Dapoq Kecik (Small Kitchen) Cooking Programme, developed by the Penang Public Library Corporation, demonstrates an innovative library approach that combines reading promotion, storytelling, traditional culinary heritage, and entrepreneurship to create meaningful community learning experiences. By integrating literacy with hands-on cultural activities, the programme promotes ithe sharing of traditional knowledge across generations while strengthening local identity and social inclusion. Since its implementation, the programme has engaged over 9,400 participants, documented more than 300 traditional recipes, supported entrepreneurship development, and contributed to a 30% increase in library footfall. These achievements highlight the library's evolving role beyond information services towards preserving intangible cultural heritage, strengthening community engagement, and creating opportunities for lifelong learning. The programme contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Dapoq Kecik demonstrates how libraries can transform local cultural assets into sustainable platforms for learning, community resilience, and inclusive development. | |
