Speech presented at Plenary Session I, 11 June 1979, during the Special Library Association’s 70th Annual Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. Wijnstroom defines the basic attitude which librarians ought to develop toward the current political and economic situation, stressing the worldwide need for theoretical knowledge in a post-industrial society that must be challenged by librarians who are confident of their ability and united in an effort to stay ahead of change in order to provide valuable service to their users.
