Verbatim transcript of Daniel J. Boorstin's speech at the 1977 IFLA World Congress of Librarians in Brussels, Belgium on 5 September 1977. Boorstin addressed important, recurrent themes such as the book as a triumph of human technology and the Displacive Fallacy, which assumes that each new technology displaces (rather than transforms) the preceding technology. Speaking as a historian, Boorstin also discussed the role of the librarian in the new technological age.
