Digitization Rural Library Services

Abstract

Libraries are the heartbeat of community transformation, serving as vital gateways to literacy, equity, and innovation, aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4 – Quality Education, SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities, and SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

This poster highlights the digital evolution of the National Library of Malaysia's (NLM) rural library network, driven by the visionary migration to the Koha Integrated Library System (ILS). For decades, rural librarians managed fragmented manual records, limiting the reach of local knowledge. To bridge this digital divide, NLM launched a centralized, open-source automation strategy beginning with 124 rural libraries in Northern Malaysia, and by 2026 expanded to another 382 rural libraries, empowering local librarians to transition from manual logs to a modern, web-based ecosystem.

Today, the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) inspires a new generation of rural citizens by democratizing access to information and fostering inclusive participation in knowledge economies. This project exemplifies how innovative technology, fueled by a passion for community service, transforms humble rural outposts into dynamic hubs of digital empowerment.
