The Pulmaario workshops are intended to create positive experiences in the context of library, mathematics and programming and support the learning of citizens’ information society skills particularly in the fields of programming and information technology. We have created a model where library professionals offer children experiential and active workshops in mathematics and programming in the library. Expertise and peer guidance is provided by the University of Helsinki. The themes of the workshops include mathematics and applied mathematics, coding, phenomenon based and active learning, puzzles, games and dilemmas, mathematical activities and hands-on learning. In the workshops children learn mathematics and programming by doing, modifying and inventing. The workshops are open and free and usually no registration is required. One important goal of the workshops is to strengthen information skills of children aged 9-13 and their families. Negative preconceptions towards learning mathematics are easier to reverse in the library than in the class room. Library is reshaping itself in a changing society and seeking new cooperation partners and operating models. Pulmaario was created in a joint project between the Helmet Libraries or the city libraries of Espoo, Helsinki, Kauniainen and Vantaa and the University of Helsinki LUMA Centre. Two resource centres from the LUMA Centre took part in the project: Summamutikka, the resource centre for teaching and learning mathematics and Linkki, the computer science resource centre. The project was funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture.en
