The Apila Summer Camp for Children Struggling with Reading

Abstract

The Apila Summer Camp is an early literacy intervention developed by Seinäjoki Public Library in partnership with local schools. The program supports second-grade children who do not yet meet expected reading levels before entering third grade. The two-week summer camp combines reading instruction with enjoyable activities designed to foster motivation, confidence, and a positive attitude toward reading.

Daily reading sessions are led by a qualified special education teacher and focus on reading fluency, decoding skills, repeated reading, and confidence building. Working in small groups allows children to receive peer support while sharing experiences with others facing similar challenges. The library setting offers a safe, inclusive, and non-school environment that encourages participation and reduces the pressure often associated with learning difficulties. Alongside structured literacy instruction, the camp includes creative activities that strengthen teamwork, self-esteem, and engagement with books. The program also reinforces the library’s role as a community partner in supporting children’s learning and wellbeing.

Feedback from parents and teachers indicates increased reading motivation, confidence, and literacy skills among participants. The results suggest that the Apila Summer Camp provides a promising and replicable model for early literacy support through collaboration between schools and public libraries.
