Abstract

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of IFLA the author deals with important stages in the development of the organization and outlines the years 1927, 1947, 1967 and 1977. Particular attention is given to relations with the League of Nations and UNESCO. The growing influence of IFLA on its path to becoming a world organization is emphasized, as well as the role of longer term planning of its activities. In n the present discussions on ways to overcome the crisis in IFLA, mainly concerning the insufficient financial guarantees for the core programmes, attention should be paid to the experiences of the past. The history of IFLA should be a challenge and a commitment for all its professional groups, and relevant research projects should be proposed by the Round Table on Library History.
