Libraries are filled with physical materials. But what do you do when the materials are worn out or if you have an excess? Can those materials be used to build relationships? The annual Creative Cartography exhibit series is a collaboration between the Arizona State University Library and the School of Art. With an emphasis on sustainability, Art on Paper classes are given materials withdrawn from the library, in this case, maps. Students are assigned to repurpose the maps using an exhibit theme chosen by the class. Art students are introduced to the library’s map and GIS resources creating an interdisciplinary focus. Then the students mount an exhibit of their art in the library. Some student artists choose to emphasize the physical features on the maps, while other students choose a particular map for its location and then convey their feelings for the area. This partnership provides exhibition opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds, introduces library patrons to new artists, and makes connections between the library and the ASU community. A curated digital exhibit provides a more permanent record for the students and increases the reach of this joint effort.en_US
