The newly revised IFLA Guidelines for Making Libraries Accessible for People with Disabilities offer basic ideas and strategies to improve accessibility in libraries. These guidelines emphasize universal design, assistive technology, and both physical and informational accessibility to ensure that everyone can access library resources. They advocate for a rights-based approach to library services for all individuals with disabilities, based on human rights laws, such as the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Additionally, the guidelines underline the importance of leadership and management in libraries, as these factors shape library policies. Moreover, the guidelines stress the need for educating library staff about the diverse range of users with disabilities. This education equips staff to provide welcoming and appropriate services that meet the needs of all users. They also offer updates on effective technologies and innovative practices to enhance accessibility in libraries. The guidelines are designed to be easy to understand, enabling librarians without specialized training or experience to serve all community members effectively. Ultimately, these efforts support the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to reduce inequalities, promote good health and well-being, ensure quality education, and support decent work and economic growth.
