International challenges to democracy and the sustainability of democratic institutions are currently challenged worldwide. Touching on the history of the Czech Republic this poster will showcase the Vaclav Havel Library Foundation (VHLF) and the role of Vaclav Havel. VHLF is a nonprofit organization established in the United States to honor, preserve, and build upon the legacy of playwright, dissident, and former President of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel. The foundation complements the Vaclav Havel Presidential Library in Prague by organizing access to unique materials documenting Havel's accomplishments and activities in North America. It creates an effective, cutting-edge interactive platform and bridge to promote worldwide awareness of Havel's crucial contributions not only to the democratic transition in Central Europe, but to ongoing debates about a much larger transition of the global community from the 20th to 21st century. The ALL (Archives, Library & Legacy) Foundation of Washington supports the State Library, Talking Books and Braille Library and the Seattle Public Library Foundation will provide an American Perspective. Coming from an international perspective exploring the libraries’ role, and in particular the role of Library Foundations, these support organizations are foundations of democracy, persisting and persevering to uphold democratic institutions.en_US
