Library: Community Wealth Hubs For The “Orang Asli” Communities

Abstract

The Orang Asli of Peninsular Malaysia, comprising 18 ethnic tribes, hold a rich cultural heritage that defines their identity. Despite this, many face ongoing socio-economic and educational hurdles. To support their progress, Perbadanan Perpustakaan Awam Selangor (PPAS) seeks to offer a supportive space where traditional life and modern opportunities can meet.

Through the Library Open Day & Mini Independence Day Carnival in 2025, PPAS invited the indigenous community to participate not just as visitors, but as contributors. By hosting handicraft workshops and managing booths, participants were able to generate their own income. This event marked a starting point where the Orang Asli began to see the library’s role in helping improve their standard of living, even in small, gradual ways.

PPAS views the library as a humble "Community Wealth Hub"—a bridge between tradition and economic stability. Beyond one-off events, the goal is to build lasting trust. We hope that through these programs, the community feels welcomed to return and make full use of the library's facilities, from internet access to educational resources.
