Abstract
Access to information remains a challenge for persons with print disabilities, especially in regions where accessible publishing is limited or non-existent. This project highlights some of the efforts toward implementing the Marrakesh Treaty in Arabic-speaking countries, particularly Egypt, and the role of key stakeholders.
Over the past five years, considerable efforts have been made to repurpose and localize tools, training programs, and advocacy strategies to meet regional needs. Many challenges and gaps have been identified, and some have been addressed through collaborative initiatives.
Milestones include adapting authoring tools to support Arabic, launching a portal for accessible Arabic publications, and offering reading experience workshops for children with print disabilities. Organizations serving persons with print disabilities have been supported in establishing their own accessible publishing services. One major achievement has been the creation of 150 Arabic titles in accessible formats, including specialized Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) content designed to raise awareness among children and youth.
While significant progress has been made, barriers remain—particularly in copyright restrictions, limited accessible Arabic content, and inadequate technological support for Arabic.
By building existing solutions and local expertise, this poster presents key milestones, addresses persistent obstacles, and offers practical recommendations for advancing accessible publishing in the region.
