Abstract

“Ask a Librarian” is a collaborative digital reference service which is supported by all participating libraries in Korea in order to facilitate information services regardless users’ location. The service is launched in January 2009, now we have a nation-wide network with 625 public libraries as of July 2019. All reference librarians from the participating libraries as well as NLK collaborate in providing information guidance with anyone who has questions and information needs. The value-added answers from expert librarians are shared at CDRS website for future reference. Once users upload their requests at “Ask a Librarian” website of local libraries, the reference librarians will give initial help. For unsettled questions, they are conveyed to representative local libraries and National Library of Korea in which there are subject specialists. Users can save time for visiting and waiting while they can get information support from experts for free. On the other hand, librarians can share materials and human resources within the cooperative system. And also they can enhance libraries presence and competencies.
