Abstract

This game is an innovative, practice-based tool that empowers libraries to strengthen democratic participation, foster dialogue, and build more inclusive communities. Developed through a collaboration between Boost Your Thinking in Portugal, Lier library in Norway, artist Anne Britt Rage, and illustrator Karstein Volle in Finland, the game transforms complex societal topics into accessible, facilitated discussions that invite citizens to co-create solutions. Rooted in the idea of libraries as “houses of democracy,” the project works through playful methodology and structured participatory tools. The game equips librarians with new skills in facilitation, community engagement, and democratic dialogue. Its design combines four card decks enabling participants to explore diverse perspectives, identify challenges, and envision actionable civic initiatives. The game has been tested in both libraries and online groups, involving interdisciplinary teams, citizens across generations, and community organisations. The results demonstrate highly engaged participants, richer cross-generational dialogue, and a practical tool that delivers real impact. The game is free to download and print and offers a scalable model that libraries worldwide can adopt to activate citizenship, and nurture connected, resilient communities.
